Case Studies

In recent years, the security industry has been facing pressing challenges such as labor shortages and rising personnel costs. Against this backdrop, Suzuyo Security Services Co., Ltd. successfully tackled these issues and improved security quality while reducing costs for clients by introducing “AI Security Asilla.” In this interview, we spoke with Mr. Kazuyuki Tsutsumi, Deputy Branch Manager of the Mishima Branch, to explore the background, implementation, and outcomes of this initiative.

Summary

Background of Introducing Asilla: The Security Industry’s “Unproductive” Dilemma and Labor Shortage

Asilla: Mr. Tsutsumi, thank you very much for your time today.

--To begin with, could you tell us about the background that led to your decision to introduce “AI Security Asilla”?

Tsutsumi: Thank you as well. I’ve been working in the security field for 22 years now. Before that, I worked in production and quality control in the manufacturing sector. When I transitioned into the security business, I was honestly quite shocked. It’s a job that doesn’t directly generate productivity for clients, yet it’s critically important. That’s why I’ve always believed it’s essential to pursue the true meaning and significance of this work and not just go through the motions.

--What sparked your interest in image recognition AI—not just Asilla?

Tsutsumi: It was right around the time I was wrestling with those questions that a sales acquaintance mentioned “Asilla” over the phone. I was immediately intrigued when I heard it was an AI video analysis system capable of detecting incidents like fights, violence, intrusions, wandering, stumbling, or abnormal behavior.

“AI Security Asilla” analyzes existing security camera footage using AI to detect abnormal behaviors (such as violence, falling, or intrusions) and alert-worthy behaviors (wandering, crowding, potential health issues) in real time. By providing 24/7 surveillance, it reduces the burden on security personnel and enables faster, more accurate responses.

-- What kind of challenges were you hoping to solve with the system?

Tsutsumi: The first thing that came to mind was the potential to make security staffing more efficient. If we could pinpoint and respond only when necessary, it could lead to a complete overhaul of how we handle facility operations. I immediately reached out to Asilla after that.

At the time, we were facing a mountain of issues: strict time limits due to workstyle reforms, chronic labor shortages leading to hiring difficulties, declining quality and retention of security personnel, soaring recruitment costs, mandatory paid leave usage, and rising minimum wages. We felt that if we didn’t act, our business would soon become unsustainable. And yet, simply passing those costs on to customers was not an option—that was the biggest dilemma.

At one commercial facility, we had 12 security staff members who were constantly rotating due to the labor shortage, requiring nonstop hiring, training, and onboarding. Even when we requested a rate increase, it didn’t contribute to profits at all.

Why We Chose Asilla: A Security Solution Unaffected by Labor Cost Inflation

--With so many security systems on the market, why did you choose Asilla?

Tsutsumi: To break the deadlock, we set three main goals and looked to solve them through the introduction of AI cameras:

  1. No rate hikes for clients (achieve efficiency through automation and AI)

  2. Review all duties (optimize tasks and improve staff retention)

  3. Enhance security quality (visualize and document activities)

We began by thoroughly analyzing the issues, understanding our clients’ true needs, and assessing what was realistically possible for us. We categorized and analyzed the duties that had been handled by security staff. Through that process, we determined that Asilla’s AI camera system could contribute most significantly to achieving these goals.

Outcomes: 213 Hours of Labor Saved and 5 Security Staff Members Reallocated

--Since introducing Asilla, what results have you seen? Are there any measurable outcomes?

Tsutsumi: We were able to drastically revise our security framework. We moved away from a 24-hour, 4-person manned setup and achieved a total reduction of 213 labor hours per month, or about 7 hours per day. We also reassigned reception duties to female staff, further lightening the load on our security team. By installing a total of 78 AI-enabled cameras throughout the facility and creating a 24/7 AI monitoring system, we were ultimately able to reduce the number of on-site security personnel by five.

This not only reduced our clients’ security costs but also allowed us to relocate staff to other sites that were experiencing labor shortages. This led to improved staffing levels and retention rates—allowing us to realize what Suzuyo values most: the spirit of “Sanpō Yoshi”benefit for the seller, buyer, and society. This outcome was made possible by the cooperation of our clients, the security team, and the dedicated staff who repeatedly visited the site for adjustments.

Asilla: Those are remarkable results. Thank you very much for sharing your insights today!

Tsutsumi: Thank you as well.
