In recent years, safety and security have become important considerations when selecting a school for children. Against this backdrop, schools are working to strengthen security, but there is still room for improvement in security, and the situation is not yet perfect.

76.4% of parents say school is safe

On the other hand, the majority of parents were concerned about the safety of the surrounding area

The question was asked solely about school safety, "Q1. Do you think your child is safe at school?" to which 76.4% of all respondents answered "strongly agree (12.4%)" or "agree (64%).

On the other hand, when asked "Q2. How do you feel about the safety of your child's school and the surrounding area? 46% of the respondents, almost a majority, answered "uneasy (11.8%)" or "somewhat uneasy (34.2%)".

In the past, there was a child murder case (June 2001) at Ikeda Elementary School attached to Osaka Kyoiku University in Ikeda City, Osaka Prefecture. Learning from this incident, schools are strengthening their internal security measures in an effort to prevent incidents and minimize damage. However, even as recently as March 2023, a teacher was slashed at a junior high school in Saitama Prefecture, and it is difficult to say that complete safety measures have been taken.

Against this backdrop, it can be said that although some parents feel that schools are safe at this point, there are a certain number of parents who are concerned about the environment against the backdrop of the recent situation.

Against a backdrop of deteriorating public safety, more than 70% of parents emphasize safety and security when choosing a school

When asked how important on-campus safety and security are to them when selecting a school, 73.8% of all respondents answered "very important (18.8%)" or "relatively important (55%)".

By gender, women were more likely to respond "relatively high importance" than men.

This indicates that women tend to have higher expectations for safety in selecting schools than men. In addition, many of the comments from those who answered "highly important" largely indicated "safety concerns," "concerns about recent security issues," and "concerns about security of the facility.
