What is the Human Science AI Research Team?

Asilla, a company with unique behavior recognition AI technology, established the "Human Science AI Research Team" focusing on human science in 2023.

Why is a company with world-class AI technology working on "human science" research now? We interviewed Mr. Masahiro Wakasa, CTO of Asilla, the founder of the team.

In the first part of this series, we will discuss "Why research on humans at an AI company? We interviewed him on the theme of "The New Connection between Human Science and AI.

Why human research at an AI company, and why HSAR was launched?

― What is the background behind the newly established "Human Science AI Research Team" at Asilla?

Asilla has been focusing on the potential of "behavior recognition AI" technology since it was not yet common, and has been developing its own technology. Until now, we have been "recognizing human behavior" based on so-called "AI" or deep learning technology, but AI technology alone inevitably has its limitations. To further expand the potential of behavior recognition AI, it is important to combine human understanding and knowledge with AI, as well as to improve the technology of AI itself. Against this background, Asilla has decided to establish the "Human Science AI Research Team (HSAR)" with the aim of taking our originally developed behavior recognition AI to a new level by combining the two technologies of "AI technology" and "human science. The team has decided to launch the "Human Science AI Research Team (hereinafter referred to as HSAR)".

― What is different now?

AI basically performs analysis based on past data and derives results. However, no matter how correct the past data is, there are cases where it produces results that deviate from original human behavior. In the case of conventional AI, the result would be unnatural, but by combining human knowledge, it leads to a correction, saying, "That's not right, that's the way it should be. In this way, we believe that combining conventional AI technology with "human understanding and knowledge" will enable us to catch human-like movements that could not be captured in the past, and our understanding of human behavior will further enhance the accuracy of "behavior recognition AI.

Promoting research focusing on "walking" and "behavior"...people

― What part of the research did you focus on?

At HSAR, we conduct a variety of research focusing on "human behavior related matters".

◆Gait Analysis" identifies people by the way they walk.

Let me introduce a few: The first is "gait analysis research. This is a technological research and development to identify "who the person is" based on characteristic movements, an area that requires in-depth knowledge of the human gait. In the case of conventional AI, (1) there is some data (2) the data is memorized, but Asilla's approach is not like that, but focuses on the characteristics of the human gait and what kind of data can be obtained as gait analysis. Instead, we focus on the human-like parameters of gait analysis and how to make AI learn based on the data.

◆Analyze a person's psychological state based on their "human trajectory."

The second is "human trajectory research. Trajectories are the paths taken by people, and this research analyzes the paths taken by people from their lines of movement. For example, people generally tend to walk in a straight line when they head for a destination. However, if a person is lost or feels a strong sense of danger, such as being involved in an incident or accident, he or she will not just walk straight, but will wander a bit, and his or her movement will change depending on the situation and state of mind. In this way, we conduct research to identify a person's psychological state by analyzing the path and trajectory of his/her gait. By combining gait analysis and gait trajectory, it is likely to lead to various solutions in the future (early resolution of crimes, early treatment, etc.), isn't it?

Asilla's goal is not to develop tools for "surveillance," but only to improve space value; we want to use AI and camera images as a means to make spaces safer, more secure, and more comfortable. Our focus on improving space value, rather than surveillance, is something we are strongly conscious of as we conduct our research.

Aiming for the world's top action recognition AI through "human x AI innovation

Based on the philosophy of "Technology Driven Future," Asilla conducts research and development on a daily basis in order to realize a world in which all people can live in safety and security. In the field of behavior recognition AI, in particular, we have a strong desire to become the world's top company, and our researchers and members are working as a team to constantly evolve.

‍‍In the future, we will further promote the further evolution of our behavior recognition AI technology and make more efforts to create an environment where all engineers can pursue their own careers and always be excited. If you are interested in AI related to human behavior, I look forward to working with you to create something together.
