Aso Kumamoto Airport Expands Operational Coverage of AI Security System “AI Security asilla”

Asilla, Inc. (Headquarters: Machida, Tokyo; CEO: Go Onoue; hereinafter “Asilla”), whose vision is “a safe and comfortable world through the power of technology,” has expanded the operational coverage of its AI security system “AI Security asilla” at Aso Kumamoto Airport, operated by Kumamoto International Airport Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Mashiki-machi, Kamimashiki-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture; President and CEO: Hideaki Yamakawa; hereinafter “Kumamoto International Airport”). In addition to the international area, the system now covers the domestic area as well, contributing to a safe and secure airport through the use of AI.

Background

In March 2023, Aso Kumamoto Airport opened a new passenger terminal building that integrates domestic and international operations. With the larger facility and the increase in passengers since the COVID-19 pandemic, the area to be secured and the volume of security work grew, and the burden of monitoring—continuously checking footage from a large number of cameras—became particularly heavy.

To address these challenges, Kumamoto International Airport began a proof-of-concept trial of “AI Security asilla” in March 2024 and moved to full-scale deployment in November of the same year. In December 2025, the system was also introduced at the Sorayoka Visitor Center within Aso Kumamoto Airport, as the airport steadily built an AI-enabled security framework. Operations centered on the international area have delivered tangible results, including more efficient security work and faster initial response.

Building on these results and aiming to further strengthen its security framework, the airport added servers to increase the number of cameras that can be analyzed and expanded the operational coverage to the domestic area. “AI Security asilla” now covers the main areas of the airport, supporting the safety and security of airport users.

Results to Date

Since full-scale deployment in November 2024, the system has been operated mainly in the international area of the passenger terminal building. The following results have been achieved so far.

More Efficient Monitoring

With AI simultaneously analyzing footage from numerous cameras and notifying security staff when it detects an abnormality, the burden of constantly watching camera feeds has been significantly reduced. As a result, monitoring work has been reduced by approximately 1,140 hours per month.*

Focused Security Operations and Faster Initial Response

With AI supporting footage review, security staff can now concentrate on tasks only people can perform, such as patrolling key locations, standing guard, and rushing to the scene. In addition, because notifications are delivered immediately when an incident occurs, staff can quickly assess the situation and intervene early, improving the speed of initial response.

Building on these results, operations were extended to the domestic area from October 2026, enabling efficient security operations across the entire airport.
Asilla will continue to work with Kumamoto International Airport to support the safe and secure operation of Aso Kumamoto Airport, while promoting the use of AI security in airports and other transportation infrastructure.

About Aso Kumamoto Airport

As a symbol of “creative reconstruction” following the Kumamoto Earthquakes, the airport opened a new passenger terminal building in March 2023 that integrates domestic and international terminal functions. In October 2024, the “Sorayoka Area” opened on adjacent land, as the airport aims to be a place that everyone can enjoy—not only air travelers. In 2026, the airport won first place in the “World’s Best New Airport Terminal” category at the World Airport Awards 2026, announced by SKYTRAX of the United Kingdom.

About “AI Security asilla”

“AI Security asilla” analyzes existing security camera footage with AI 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, instantly detecting abnormal behaviors such as violence, falls, and intrusion, as well as behaviors that require attention, such as loitering, crowding, and signs of illness. Amid a worsening shortage of security personnel, it captures anomalies that are easily missed by human monitoring and immediately notifies security staff and managers. Because it works with existing cameras, no additional capital investment is required, making it a next-generation security solution that maintains a high level of safety even with limited staff.
