Do ventures and start-ups need patents?

Member Introduction

1.Why Asilla values intellectual property

Asilla has already started research and development of AI behavior recognition since around 2015, when the paradigm shift by AI occurred, and possesses many technologies and know-how specialized in AI-based behavior recognition. And while startups often do not have the time to develop intellectual property strategies, we have also acquired multiple patent rights related to AI behavior recognition technology.

As Asilla has been a pioneer in the research and development of AI behavior recognition, many of the patents we hold have a broad range of rights. However, the reason why we focus on acquiring patent rights is not only for technological monopoly, but also because we are a start-up company and in the field of AI technology.

<Must be a start-up company>

Even if the technology is important, the strategy may be to "keep it secret without filing a patent application. However, if another company obtains a patent right for a technology for which no patent application has been filed, it will be difficult for a start-up company without sufficient resources to recover.

For this reason, Asilla actively works to obtain patent rights for important technologies in order to ensure the continued use of those technologies. We believe that this provides our clients with peace of mind in the use of our products and services.

<Must be in the AI technology field>

The speed of technological progress in the field of AI technology is tremendous, and it is not uncommon for technology to become obsolete within a few months. Therefore, in the field of AI technology, constant creation of technologies is the lifeline for business continuity.

Considering such special circumstances in the field of AI technology, Asilla has established an employee invention system that allows inventors to earn large returns even though it is a start-up company, and encourages its employees to create superior technologies that lead to the acquisition of patent rights.

In the field of AI technology, where the pace of technological progress is extremely fast, it is also key to select and choose which technologies to protect. Taking this into consideration, Asilla has in-house patent attorneys and carefully selects technologies before filing patent applications. As a result, we believe that many of the patents held by Asilla have long-lasting effects in the field of AI behavior recognition.

2.Vision for the future

In 2000, Japan ranked first in the number of patent applications for advanced technologies in five out of ten fields, but by 2017, all of those top positions had been taken by the U.S. and China. This can be attributed to the fact that countries around the world have begun to realize the benefits of intellectual property, which were previously difficult to see.

However, the strength of IP cannot be measured by quantity alone. Especially in the field of AI technology, where the speed of technological progress is extremely fast, only high-quality IP that is effective over the long term will have value.

We have already obtained patents overseas for technologies that will be effective over the long term, and we intend to continue creating high-quality IP one after another with an eye to global expansion. We hope to prove that we can compete on the world stage with these IP assets and become a leader in Japan and the world in the field of AI behavior recognition.
