Many universities are working to make their campuses more open to the surrounding community while also maintaining an environment in which students and faculty can feel secure. However, there are limits to what a small number of security personnel can cover across an extensive campus, and interest in AI video analytics that make use of existing security cameras is growing in the education sector as well.
Mukogawa Gakuin is one of the institutions that has addressed this challenge over many years. Since its founding in 1939, it has placed importance on creating an environment in which students can study with peace of mind. In April 2027, the institution will reach a major milestone as Mukogawa Women's University is renamed "Mukogawa University" and becomes coeducational across all 13 faculties and 21 departments. Against this backdrop, the university has been reviewing how to further strengthen the safety of its campus environment for students and faculty.
As part of these efforts, the two organizations have agreed to begin a trial at the university's Chuo Campus. "AI Security asilla" does not use facial recognition; instead, it applies proprietary technology that analyzes behavior based on skeletal data extracted from video, enabling detection that is considerate of student privacy — a point that was also valued in the decision to adopt the system. On a campus where a wide range of people gather, the two organizations will verify how the system can improve safety for students and faculty and enable more advanced security operations.
The trial will be conducted at the Chuo Campus of Mukogawa Women's University, operated by Mukogawa Gakuin. It will run for approximately six months, from September 2026 to February 2027, and will verify how AI video analytics using existing security camera footage can strengthen the campus safety monitoring framework.
Detection of entry into restricted areas
AI detects entry into areas that are off-limits to unauthorized individuals and immediately notifies security personnel and university staff.
Early detection of unusual behavior
AI automatically detects behavior that deviates from normal campus use, such as prolonged loitering or wandering, and immediately notifies security personnel.
Early detection of incidents
AI detects signs of behavior that could lead to trouble, such as altercations between students, enabling a faster response.
Through this trial, the two organizations will verify improvements in the accuracy of safety monitoring and the speed of initial response, and will consider ongoing operation based on the results.
Mukogawa Women's University is a private university with three campuses in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture. Founded on Mukogawa Gakuin, established in 1939, it is Japan's largest comprehensive university for women, with 13 faculties and 21 departments as well as 8 graduate schools and 14 graduate programs, and approximately 10,000 students. The Chuo Campus, the site of this trial, is a main campus located about a 7-minute walk from Naruo-Mukogawajoshidai-mae Station on the Hanshin Railway. "AI Security asilla" is a system in which AI analyzes footage from existing security cameras 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, instantly detecting abnormal behavior such as violence, falls, and intrusion, as well as behavior requiring attention such as wandering, crowding, and signs of poor physical condition.
